Tom Elliot

Director and Distinguished Fellow

Tom Elliot was CTO for TCI and co-founder of Cable Labs.

Tom’s distinguished career has included being part of the merger that created TCI, building the first billable fiber optic network (for NORAD in 1976), and engineering and building the world’s first commercial transportable uplink.  Tom Elliot was instrumental in developing component standards for the cable industry, specifications that are still in effect today.

In 1980, Tom took the TCI system in Lakewood, Colorado, converted it into a two-way plant, and actually tested VOD, HSD, ITV and other advanced services. While the Lakewood tests proved TCI's core equipment too primitive for a rollout of two-way services, the trials were a watershed moment in cable history.

Tom Elliot took a sabbatical from TCI in 1989 through 1991.  Tom used this leave to co-found Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., Cable Labs.  Tom Elliot also initiated a joint venture with Scientific-Atlanta and GI (now Motorola) to developed digital compression for the distribution of standard definition TV.

Tom Elliot was inducted into the SCTE Hall of Fame in 1996.  He left TCI in 1997, again joining Cable Labs work on special projects dealing with digital television, high definition television, and the consumer electronics industry.

Upon the successful completion of the Telephony roll out Ron became the Digital Project Engineer for the Great Lakes Region, where he was the project lead for 25 systems located throughout Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. As project lead, he was responsible for system readiness prior to the deployment of digital transmissions within the network.
